The Lord’s Supper has been a centerpiece of the practice of Christianity for the entire history of the Church. It was instituted by Christ on the night in which He was betrayed. The earliest extrabiblical records of the Church indicate that the Lord’s Supper was observed regularly from the earliest days. All four of the gospel accounts record it, and the Synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke - provide a detailed description of the events of the first Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:23-34 provides an explanation for how the Church is to observe the Lord’s Supper: this passage follows closely with the explanations seen in the Synoptic Gospels.
